Kamdani (often called Mukaish or Badla work) derives its name from two root components:It comes from the combination of "Kam" (meaning work or craft) and "Dani" (meaning container/vessel or referring to a skilled expert). Historically, it loosely translates to "fine metal-thread needlework". The technique involves threading flattened metallic wires (badla) made of silver or gold directly through sheer fabric to form delicate dots, stars (fardi), and intricate motifs. Developed and refined during the 16th-century Mughal era, the craft flourished in the royal courts of Awadh (Lucknow). It was popularized by royalty and noble families as a lightweight alternative to heavy Zardozi embroidery.
